The author is interested in the following question. What homotopy, homology or cohomology properties are characteristic of Peano continua? As an important example in this direction he recalls the following result by \textit{S. Shelah} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 103, 627--632 (1988; Zbl 0661.55012)]. Theorem. Let \(X\) be a Peano continuum. Then \(\pi _{1}(X)\) is finitely generated or uncountable. In the paper under review the following results are proved for a Peano continuum \(X\): (1) The singular cohomology group \(H^{1}(X)\) is isomorphic to the Čech cohomology group \(\check{H}^{1}(X)\). (2) For each homomorphism \(h:\pi _{1}(X)\rightarrow \ast _{i\in I}G_{i}\) there exists a finite subset \(F\) of \(I\) such that \(\text{Im}(h)\subset \ast _{i\in F}G_{i}\). (3) For each injective homomorphism \(h:\pi _{1}(X)\rightarrow G_{0}\ast G_{1}\) there exists a finitely generated subgroup \(F_{0}\) of \(G_{0}\) or a finitely generated subgroup \(F_{1}\) of \(G_{1}\) such that \(\text{Im}(h)\subset F_{0}\ast G_{1}\) or \(\text{Im}(h)\subset G_{0}\ast F_{1}\).
