A one-dimensional wave equation of an elastic string on a large time interval is considered. The authors give a closed form expression for the optimal boundary control by an elastic force applied at one end of the string (the other being free) minimizing the elastic boundary integral energy such that the vibration process brings the string from a given initial state to a given terminal state.
