The authors study existence of solutions to the Dirichlet problem \[ -\Delta u+g(u)=0 \quad \text{in}\;\Omega,\qquad u=\mu \quad \text{on}\;\partial\Omega, \] with a bounded measure \(\mu\) and a nondecreasing function \(g\colon\;\mathbb R \to \mathbb R\) such that \(g(t)=0\) \(\forall t\leq0.\) Although the problem is solvable for any \(\mu\in L^1(\partial\Omega),\) this is not the case when \(\mu\) is a general bounded measure. By introducing the concept of reduced measure \(\mu^*,\) the authors characterize the set of \(\mu\) for which the above problem admits a solution.
