Given a separable C*-algebra \(A\), the authors start with the notion of symmetric unbounded Fredholm module as some triple \((\mathcal H, \pi, T)\) consisting of a Hilbert space \(\mathcal H\), a *-representation \(\pi: A \to B(\mathcal H)\) and a sensely defined closed symmetric operator \(T\) satistfying some natural conditions. To each symmetric unbounded Fredholm module the authors associate an element \([\mathcal H, \pi, T]\in K^i(A)\). They establish also the additive formula for the Dirac operator on the circle and the Dolbeault operator on closed surfaces, and construct in pure analytical language, various homomorphisms between the K-homology of classifying spaces and the K-theory of C*-algebras in connection with the Baum-Connes conjecture.
