A partial automorphism of a semigroup \(S\) is any automorphism between its subsemigroups. The set of all partial automorphisms of \(S\) is an inverse monoid with respect to composition. The problem is what we can say about two semigroups if the inverse monoids of all their partial automorphisms are isomorphic. Such semigroups are called \(\mathcal{PA}\)-isomorphic. The author reviews many known results concerning this problem and related problems and obtains many consequences. Let us mention two main results. Let \(K\) be a class of inverse semigroups, in which no maximal isolated subgroup is a direct product of an involution-free periodic group and the two-element cyclic group. It is proved that if a semigroup \(S\) belongs to \(K\) and a semigroup \(T\) is \(\mathcal{PA}\)-isomorphic to \(S\), then \(T\) belongs to \(K\), too. It is also proved that if \(S\) is a combinatorial inverse semigroup which is either shortly connected or quasi-Archimedean, then every semigroup \(T\), which is \(\mathcal{PA}\)-isomorphic to \(S\), is isomorphic or anti-isomorphic to \(S\).
