The author investigates the semilinear equation \(\Delta u+f(x,u)=0\) in a bounded smooth domain \(\Omega\subset R^n\). The function \(x\to f(x,u)\) belongs to \(L^1(\Omega)\) for all \(u>0\), and the function \(u\to f(x,u)\) is continuous and non increasing for a.e. \(x\in\Omega\). Moreover, \(f(x,u)\geq 0\) for all \(u>0\), and \(f(x,u)>0\) in a subset of \(\Omega\) with positive measure. Again, the function \(f(x,u)\) satisfies the condition \(\int_\Omega f(x,cd(x,\partial\Omega))dx <\infty\) for all \(c>0\). Here \(d(x,\partial\Omega)\) denotes the distance from \(x\) to the boundary of \(\Omega\). Under these conditions, it is proved existence and uniqueness of a solution \(u\in W^{1,1}_0(\Omega)\) such that \(f(x,u(x))\in L^1(\Omega)\), \(u>0\) a.e. in \(\Omega\).
