The goal of the paper is to give an algebro-geometric approach to the Hamiltonian/gauge theoretical invariants for smooth projective toric varieties. The Hamiltonian/gauge theoretical invariants use another compactification of moduli of maps than usual Kontsevich-Manin moduli spaces; this compactification is birational to an irreducible component of the usual one. Batyrev showed that genus zero invariants do not coincide with the usual Gromov--Witten ones in general. These invariants were introduced by using infinite-dimensional methods; the author presents his construction in purely algebraic terms in the case of toric varieties. The author presents localization formulas for Hamiltonian/gauge theoretical invariants. Using degeneration technics, he also presents explicit recursive relations that reduce the higher genus invariants to the genus zero ones. Finally, he gives some computational examples, which illustrate the general theory.
