The author gives a complete answer to a question of \textit{J.-M. Fontaine} and \textit{M. Rapoport} [Bull. Soc. Math. Fr. 133, No.~1, 73--86 (2005; Zbl 1073.14025)]. More precisely, let \(k\) be an algebraically closed field of characteristic \(p > 0\) and let \(\sigma\in\text{Aut}(K/\mathbb Q_p)\) be the Frobenius automorphism of the quotient field \(K\) of the Witt vectors \(W(k)\). Fix an isocrystal \((V,\Phi)\) of dimension \(d\) over \(k\), that is, a \(d\)-dimensional vector space \(V\) over \(K\) together with a \(\sigma\)-linear bijective endomorphism \(\Phi\) of \(V\), and consider a filtration \({\mathcal F}^*\) of \(V\) by linear subspaces. Thus, by definition \((V,\Phi,{\mathcal F}^*)\) is a filtered isocrystal over \(k\). To every Harder-Narasimhan filtration of a filtered isocrystal we associate the \(HN\)-vector \(\lambda = (\lambda_1,\dots,\lambda_d)\in (\mathbb{Q}^d)_+ := \{(v_1,\dots,v_d)\in \mathbb{Q}^d :v_1\geq \cdots \geq v_d\}\). The question of Fontaine and Rapoport is to determine the set of HN-vectors for a fixed isocrystal \((V,\Phi)\) and a fixed Hodge vector \(\mu = (\mu_1,\dots,\mu_d)\in ({\mathbb{Q}}^d)_+\) reflecting the type of the filtration \({\mathcal F}^*\).
