Let \(X\) be a smooth projective curve of genus \(g\geq 4\) over an algebraically closed field of characteristic 0 and \(L\) be a very ample line bundle on \(X\). \(L\) is said to be normally generated if the corresponding embedding of \(X\) into \(\mathbb{P}(H^0(L))\) is projectively normal. The most important result for the problem of normal generation was obtained by \textit{M. Green} and \textit{R. Lazarsfeld} [Invent. Math. 83, 73--90 (1986; Zbl 0594.14010)] who proved that \(L\) is normally generated whenever \(\deg(L)\geq 2g+1-2h^1(L)-\text{Cliff}(X).\) They also proved that this inequality is optimal, and discussed the extremal case \(\deg(L)=2g-2h^1(L)-\text{Cliff}(X).\) In the paper under review, the author discusses the next case \(\deg(L)=2g-1-2h^1(L)-\text{Cliff}(X)\) and shows that in the range \(g>\max\{(c+4)(c+3)/2,6c+8\}\) (\(c=\text{Cliff}(X)\)) there exist just four cases of pairs \((X,L)\) where \(L\) is not normally generated.
