The author notices that symplectic torus bundles \(\xi: T^2\to E\to B\) over a connected surface \(B\) are classified by the second cohomology group \(H^2(B; {\mathbb Z}^2_{\rho})\) which is obtained by the representation \(\rho\) of \(\pi_1(B)\) on \(H^1(T^2)\) from the fiber bundle structure. The main theorem says that the total space \(E\) admits a symplectic structure compatible with the bundle structure if and only if the class \(c(\xi)\in H^2(B; {\mathbb Z}^2_{\rho})\) corresponding to \(\xi\) is a torsion class. If \(B\) is non-closed or closed genus \(0\), the theorem is proved rather easily. In the case that \(B\) is a closed surface of genus \(\neq0\), the proof is based on a construction of \textit{J. Huebschmann} [J. Algebra 72, 296--334 (1981; Zbl 0443.18018)] for group extensions and the notion of fiberwise localization of group extensions of groups which are not necessarily nilpotent. The author interprets the statement about symplectic torus bundles in terms of group extensions to which the homotopy exact sequence of the bundles reduces by \textit{W. P. Thurston} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 55, 467--468 (1976; Zbl 0324.53031)].
