The authors study chaotic phase synchronization using a conditional Poincaré map approach. Given the phases \(\phi_1(t)\) and \(\phi_2(t)\) of two coupled oscillators, the phase synchronization takes place if \(| \phi_1(t)-r\phi_2(t)| <\text{ const}\) holds. In this work, the authors show that the conditional Poincaré map can be used to detect phase synchronization without having to measure the phase. Given two oscillators, such a map is constructed by collecting points in one oscillator at the moment at which some event occurs in the other oscillator.
