The author gives a detailed proof of the following result of \textit{S.~Popa} [J.\ Oper.\ Theory 9, 253--268 (1983; Zbl 0521.46048)], since there was a minor mistake in the original proof. Theorem. If \(\mathcal{R}\) is the hyperfinite type \(\mathrm{II}_1\) factor with a separable predual, then there is a proper subfactor \(\mathcal{R}_0\) of \(\mathcal{R}\) such that each maximal Abelian self-adjoint subalgebra (masa) in \(\mathcal{R}_0\) is a masa in \(\mathcal{R}\). It is also proved that if \(\mathcal{N}\) is a proper subfactor of a factor \(\mathcal{M}\) of type \(\mathrm{II}_1\) with a finite Jonex index, then there is a masa in \(\mathcal{N}\) that is not a masa in \(\mathcal{M}\).
