Let \(X\) be a Banach space with \(\dim X>2\) and let \(B_0(X)\) be the linear span of all nilpotent operators in \(B(X)\). In [Acta Sci. Math. 61, No. 1--4, 523--534 (1995; Zbl 0843.47024)], \textit{P.~Šemrl} described surjective linear maps \(\Phi:B_0(X)\to B_0(X)\) that preserve nilpotent operators in both directions. In the paper under review, the authors show that Šemrl's result still holds if one assumes only additivity of \(\Phi\) (instead of linearity). As an application, they show that the result by \textit{M. Brešar} and \textit{P. Šemrl} [J. Funct. Anal. 142, No.~2, 360--368 (1996; Zbl 0873.47002)] on spectral radius preserving linear maps on \(B(X)\) can also be extended to additive maps.
