Quillen's small object argument [\textit{D.G. Quillen}, Homotopical algebra. Lecture Notes in Mathematics 43, Springer-Verlag, (Berlin-Heidelberg-New York) (1967; Zbl 0168.20903)] is the main tool for the construction of functorial factorizations in model categories. In its original form, the argument is applicable to cofibrantly generated model categories only. The author proposes an extension of the framework of cofibrantly generated model categories introducing the concept of class-cofibrantly generated model category, which is a model category generated by classes of cofibrations and trivial cofibrations satisfying some assumptions. The categorical dual to a class-cofibrantly generated model category is called class-fibrantly generated. The main theorem is a generalization of the small object argument for this new context, containig two sets of conditions and two statements: about the existence of functorial and non-functorial factorizations. The author continues the paper discussing some non-trivial examples: The equivariant model structure on the diagrams of spaces [\textit{E.D. Farjoun}, Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 101, 181--189 (1987; Zbl 0661.55017)] is shown to be class-cofibrantly generated, the equivariant model structure on the diagrams of chain complexes is constructed and shown to be class-cofibrantly generated, and both known model structures on the category of pro-spaces [\textit{D.A. Edwards and H.M. Hastings}, Čech and Steenrod homotopy theories with applications to geometric topology (Lecture Notes in Mathematics. 542, Springer-Verlag, Berlin-Heidelberg-New York) (1976; Zbl 0334.55001)] [\textit{D.C. Isaksen}, Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 353, No. 7, 2805--2841 (2001; Zbl 0978.55014)] are shown to be class-fibrantly generated, in this case with generating classes verifying the non-functorial version of the generalized cosmall argument.
