This article is motivated by the following problem known as the generalized Jacobian conjecture. If \(X\) is a normal algebraic variety defined over complex numbers and \(\phi:X\to X\) is an étale endomorphism then is \(\phi\) finite? Notice that if the answer to this is in the affirmative, then the usual Jacobian conjecture will follow trivially. One can see more details about this conjecture in the article by the author and \textit{K.~Masuda} [Stud. Math., Tata Inst. Fundam. Res. 16, 427--466 (2002; Zbl 1053.14071)]. This leads the author to study a more general situation where one has an étale morphism \(f:Y\to X\) such that the codimension of the complement of \(f(Y)\) is at least two. Such maps are called pseudo-coverings. In this paper the author studies pseudo-coverings as above where either \(X\) or \(Y\) is the affine plane.
