    Given a von Neumann algebra \({\mathcal M}\), a Markov semigroup \({\mathcal T}=(T_t)_{t\in J}\subset{\mathcal L}(M_*)\), with \(J={\mathbb R}_+\) or \({\mathbb Z}_+\), consists of Markov operators \(T_t\) mapping the set \(S\) of normal states into itself. Let \({\mathcal A}_t({\mathcal T})f\) be the respective Cesaro mean, e.g., \(t^{-1}\int_0^t T_sf\,ds\), \(f\in{\mathcal M}_*\). The paper provides analogues of important results, known in the commutative setting of \({\mathcal M}_*=L^1(\Omega, \Sigma, \mu \)), on the asymptotic behaviour of \({\mathcal T}\) (and \({\mathcal A}_t({\mathcal T})\)). Section 2 proves that \({\mathcal T}\) is mean ergodic (m.e.) if, for any \(f\in S\), \(\lim\sup_{t\to\infty}\text{ dist}\;({\mathcal A}_t({\mathcal T})f,[-g,g])\leq\eta \) for some \(\eta \in[0,1)\) and the order interval with \(g\in {\mathcal M}_{*+}\); the version for \({\mathcal M}_*=L_1\) is also due to the authors [Ann. Polon. Math. 83, 11--19 (2004; Zbl 1053.37002)]. Moreover, criteria of m.e. and asymptotic stability for \({\mathcal T}\) are given in terms of existence of a lower bound element \(h\) for \({\mathcal T}\), satisfying \(\lim_{t\to\infty}\| (h-T_tf)_+\| =0\). Section 3 establishes that the cone \({\mathcal M}_{*+}\) ordering \({\mathcal M}_{*sa}\) is \textit{strongly normal}, which is used in the sequel; cf. the authors' paper [Positivity 7, 3--22 (2003; Zbl 1042.47029)]. Section 4 deals with the concept of \(\alpha \)-constrictor for \({\mathcal T}\), \(\alpha \geq0\), defined as a set \(\emptyset\neq A\subset{\mathcal M}_{*sa}\) with \(\lim\sup_{t\to\infty}\text{ dist}\;(T_tf,A)\leq\alpha \) for \(f\in({\mathcal M}_{*sa})_1\). \({\mathcal T}\) is a constrictive (has a compact 0-constrictor), e.g., if it has an \(\alpha \)-constrictor \([-g,g]\) with \(\alpha \in[0,1)\), \(g\in {\mathcal M}_{*+}\). Section 5 shows that for a m.e. Markov \(T\) (i.e., \(\{T^n\}_{n\in{\mathbb Z}}\) is m.e.) the same is true of \(T^m\) for \(m\in{\mathbb N}\). Also \(T\) inherits m.e. from an asymptotically dominating positive operator. Some extensions of the scope to ordered Banach spaces are possible.
