The author introduces a notion of pseudo-Riemannian spectral triple, which is a generalization of Connes' notion of spectral triple. The metric information of a Riemann manifold can be encoded in a spectral triple \((A, H, D)\), where \(A\) is the algebra of complex valued smooth functions on \(M\), \(H\) is the Hilbert space of square integrable spinor sections and \(D\) is the classical Dirac operator. In the definition of the spectral triple \((A, H, D)\) the operator \(D\) should be selfadjoint. In the case of pseudo-Riemannian manifolds Dirac type operators are not selfadjoint. However there exists a Krein space structure such that there are Krein-selfadjoint Dirac type operators. This result motivates the notion of pseudo-Riemannian spectral triple introduced in this paper. A pseudo-Riemannian spectral triple consists of an involutive algebra \(A\) of bounded operators acting on a Krein space \(H\) and a Krein-selfadjoint operator \(D\). For example, if \(M\) is a Lorentzian spin manifold, \(A\) is the algebra of smooth functions on \(M\), \(D\) is the Dirac operator which acts on the Krein space \(H\) of square integrable sections of the spinor bundle, then \((A, D, H)\) is a pseudo-Riemannian spectral triple. The author endows the noncommutative tori with pseudo-Riemannian spectral triples and proves that for noncommutative tori as well as for pseudo-Riemannian spin manifolds there is a canonical notion of integration and one can recover the signature of the metric from the spectral data.
