Let \(G\) be a group satisfying the following hypothesis saying that \(G\) has a split BN-pair of rank \(1\): (H1) \(G\) acts doubly-transitive on a set \(\Omega\), \(H\) is the stabilizer in \(G\) of a point in \(\Omega\) and \(t\) is an involution in \(G\setminus H\) such that \(D=H\cap H^t\) has a normal complement \(Q\) in \(H\). By a theorem of \textit{C. Hering, W. M. Kantor, G. M. Seitz} [J. Algebra 20, 435-475 (1972; Zbl 0244.20003)] the finite groups \(G\) satisfying (H1) are known. In Théorème 1 of the paper it is proved that \(G\) has a regular normal subgroup if \(G\) satisfies (H1) with \(D=1\) and there exist \(z,u,v\in Z(Q)\setminus\{1\}\) such that \(tzt=utv\). Two further results of the paper require the following strengthening of the hypothesis: (H2) In addition to hypothesis (H1) the condition \(1\neq P=C_Q(D)\subset Z(Q)\) holds. The author obtains the following theorems. Théorème 2. Suppose (H2) and that \(|P|>2\). Then \(G\) has a regular normal subgroup or \(|Q|=3\) and there exists a subgroup \(G_0\) of \(G\) such that \(G=G_0D\), \(G_0\cap D=Z(G_0)\) is cyclic of order \(4\), and \(G_0\) of order \(16\times 3\) is uniquely determined up to isomorphism, having a normal Sylow \(2\)-subgroup. Théorème 3. Suppose (H2) and that \(|P|=2\) and \(Q/P\) is Abelian. Then \(G\) has a regular normal subgroup or \(Q\) is a quaternion group and there exists a normal subgroup \(G_0\) of \(G\) such that \(G=G_0D\), \(G_0\cap D=Z(G_0)\) is of order \(3\) and \(G_0\cong\text{SU}(3,2)\) of order \(27\times 8\) having a normal Sylow \(3\)-subgroup.
