This interesting paper deals with the construction of non-\(C^1\) one-homogeneous maps \(u: B\to\mathbb R^2\) and nonnegative strictly polyconvex function \(f\) such that \[ \{Du(x): x\in B\}\subseteq \{A^{2\times 2}: f(A)= 0\}, \] where \(B\) denotes the unit ball in \(\mathbb R^2\) centred at the origin. Strict polyconvexity means that \[ f(A)= g(A,\text{det\,}A)\quad\text{for all }A\in\mathbb R^{2\times 2}, \] and some strictly convex function \(g\). Such \(u\) are therefore singular minimizers of the corresponding strictly polyconvex functionals \[ I(u)= \int_B f(Du(x))\,dx \] in appropiate Sobolev spaces. Such \(f\) does not satisfy the strong ellipticity condition.
