The authors consider stationary electrovacuum spacetimes with closed timelike curves, and they investigate whether the region with closed timelike curves can be still present if an interior solution is matched. Their technique is based on the observation that the total charge of the interior solution cannot be arbitrarily large because the mutual repellent forces on its constituents must be balanced by their gravitational attraction. Two cases are discussed. For a single charged spinning body, where the electrovacuum region is described by the Kerr-Newman metric, they find that the region with closed timelike curves is always covered by the source. For two electrically and magnetically charged spinning bodies, where the electrovacuum region is described by the Perjes-Israel-Wilson metric, however, they find that this is not always true. So in the latter case the closed timelike curves would be detectable in principle.
