It is known that there exist orthonormal wavelets, which can not be derived from a multiresolution analysis with a single generator; however, any orthonormal wavelet can be derived from a multiresolution analysis with a countable number of generators. It is proved that the smallest number of scaling functions which suffices is given by the essential supremum of the dimension function.
