The Freudenthal-Weil theorem describes the structure of connected locally compact groups admitting a continuous embedding in a compact group. The author narrows down this theorem from locally compact groups to pro-Lie groups, and generalizes it from continuous embeddings to some discontinuous ones. A homomorphism \(\pi\) of a pro-Lie group \(G\) to a topological group \(H\) is \textit{finally continuous} if \(\bigcap_{N}\overline{\pi(N)}\) is trivial, where \(N\) runs over all normal subgroups \(N\in G\) such that \(G/N\) is a Lie group. Let \(G\) be a connected pro-Lie group, \(\pi:G\to C\) a (not necessarily continuous) homomorphic embedding of \(G\) into a compact group \(C\), \(R\subset G\) the radical of \(G\). It is proved that if \(\pi|_R\) is finally continuous then \(G\) is the direct product of a compact group and the additive group of a weakly complete vector space.
