A conjecture of Batyrev and Manin predicts the asymptotic behavior of the number of points of bounded height on certain varieties. The conjectural estimate involves an unspecified constant. A special case of this conjecture for the height associated with an adelic metric on the anti-canonical line bundle of \({\mathbb{P}}^n\) has been achieved by \textit{E. Peyre} [Duke Math. J. 79, No. 1, 101--218 (1995; Zbl 0901.14025)], who obtains an explicit value for the corresponding constant in this special case; the value depends on a Tamagawa measure. The main result of the paper under review is an explicit asymptotic estimate for the number of points of bounded height on \({\mathbb{P}}^1\), where the height is given by an adelic metric on the line bundle \({\mathcal O}_{{\mathbb{P}}^1}(1)\). This results generalizes the case of the classical height, due to \textit{D. Masser} and \textit{J. D. Vaaler} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 359, No. 1, 427--445 (2007; Zbl 1215.11100)]. The proof uses Peyre's result for a symmetric power of \({\mathbb{P}}^1\); the explicit constant involves Peyre's constant. This paper includes also an introduction to adelic metrics on linear bundles and related heights.
