The authors endeavor to exhibit variants, in the framework of operator algebras which are either unital or have an approximate identity, of results by Størmer, Friedman and Russo, Effros and Choi, Effros and Størmer, and others, concerning projections and their ranges. Among other questions, they investigate the ``bicontractive projection problem'', and related problems as well, using as main ingredient the concept of ``real positivity''.
