For a prime number \(p,\) the \(p\)-Zassenhaus filtration of a profinite group \(G\) is the fastest descending series of (closed) subgroups \(G_{(i)}\) such that \(G_{(1)}=G\) and \(G_{(i)}^p\subseteq G_{(pi),}\) \([G_{(i)},G_{(j)}]\subseteq G_{(i+j)}\) for every \(i,j\geq 1.\) The aim of this paper is to develop a method for determining the \(\mathbb F_p\)-dimension of subquotients of the Zassenhaus filtration in the case of finitely generated pro-\(p\) groups. Given a finitely generated pro-\(p\)-group \(G,\) for each positive integer \(n\) let \(c_n(G)=\dim_{\mathbb F_p} (G_{(n)}/G_{(n+1)}).\) The authors provide a unifying principle for deriving an explicit formula for \(c_n(G)\) for various families of groups \(G,\) including finitely generated free pro-\(p\)-groups, Demushkin groups, and free pro-2 products of finitely many copies of the cyclic group \(C_2\) of order 2. Galois theory provides much of the underlying motivation, as many of these groups are realizable as Galois groups of maximal \(p\)-extensions of local fields.
