The author studies totally ordered monoids (tomonoids), concentrating on those which are commutative, positive, and finitely generated. For this, he uses congruences and preorders of free monoids, and introduces \textit{direction cones}. A Galois connection between monomial preorders and direction cones is established. Any finitely generated positive commutative tomonoid is proved to be the quotient of a tomonoid arising from a direction cone.
