The authors of this paper study the intermediate-value property for the Assouad dimension of a metric space. By a theorem of Besicovitch on the Hausdorff measure the following is known: if \(E\) is a subset of the Euclidean space \(\mathbb{R}^n\) with Hausdorff dimension \(\dim_HE=s\), then, for every \(\alpha\in(0,s)\), there exists a subset \(F\) of \(E\) such that \(\dim_HF=\alpha\). This fact is translated as the Hausdorff dimension having the intermediate-value property. The same property is shared by the packing dimension of subsets of \(\mathbb{R}^n\) as a consequence of a theorem by Joyce and Preiss. The authors use a number of interesting lemmas to prove the main result which, in particular, states that given a bounded metric space \(X\) with finite Assouad dimension \(s\), then for every \(\alpha\in(0,s)\), there exists a countable subset \(E\) of \(X\) such that \(\dim_AE=\alpha\).
