The book is a systematic treatise of timely and central topics of magnetoencephalography (MEG) and electroencephalography (EEG) such as inverse problems arising in these areas. It delivers an analytical approach supported by numerical investigations aimed at the computing the cortical neuronal current based upon EEG and MEG data and focuses on the realistic situations of a continuous distribution of current. The coherent and systematic exposure of the material with all required mathematical formalism and derivations is an outstanding feature of the volume. The book is organized in a coherent way into nine chapters. Chapter 1 serves as an introduction to the subject and provides selected prerequisites concerning the electromagnetics of brain activity. Chapter 2 elaborates on the non-uniqueness results for deterministic EEG and MEG data. Analysis of distributed current in spherical and ellipsoidal geometry is covered in Chapter 3. Chapters 4 and 5 are devoted to the spherical and ellipsoidal models followed by the determination of localized current in Chapter 6. A minimization approach to EEG for both spherical and ellipsoidal approaches is discussed in Chapter 7. The discussion on numerical implementations follows in Chapter 8. Chapter 9 concerns an inverse problem of EEG and MEG with current confined to the cortical surface. The material is logically structured; the derivations are sound and complete. Additional motivating comments and detailed computations supplement the main flow of the presentation. In sum, the book offers a good coverage of the area and exposes the reader to the recent progress there.
