    The aim of this paper is to give Bernstein-type existence theorems for the problem \[\frac{d}{dt}\Phi ^{\prime }\left( \dot{u}\right) =f\left( t,u,\dot{u}\right) ,t\in \left[ 0,1\right] \] with Sturm-Liouville boundary conditions \[-\alpha u\left( 0\right) +\beta \dot{u} \left( 0\right) =A,au\left( 1\right) +b\dot{u}\left( 1\right) =B,\] where \(\Phi \) is an increasing homeomorphism, \(f:\left[ 0,1\right] \times \mathbb{R}\times \mathbb{R}\rightarrow \mathbb{R}\) is a continuous function and \(\alpha ,\beta ,a,b>0.\) The authors assume that \begin{itemize} \item[\((\Phi 1)\)] \(\Phi \) is strictly convex, differentiable and \(\Phi \left( x\right) /\left| x\right| \rightarrow \infty \) as \(\left| x\right| \rightarrow \infty ;\) \item[\((\Phi 2)\)] \(\Phi \left( 0\right) =\Phi ^{\prime }\left( 0\right) =0\); \item[\((\Phi 3)\)] \(\left( \Phi ^{\prime }\right) ^{-1}\) is continuously differentiable; \item[\((\Phi 4)\)] there exists a constant \(K_{\Phi }>1\) such that \(K_{\Phi }\Phi \left( x\right) \leq x\Phi ^{\prime }\left( x\right) \) for all \(x\in \mathbb{R};\) \item[\((f1)\)] There exists a constant \(M>0\) such that \(xf\left( t,x,0\right) >0\) for all \(\left| x\right| >M;\) \item[\((f2)\)] There exist positive functions \(S\) and \(T\) bounded on bounded sets such that \(\left| f\left( t,x,v\right) \right| \leq S\left( t,x\right) \left( v\Phi ^{\prime }\left( v\right) -\Phi \left( v\right) \right) +T\left( t,x\right) .\) \end{itemize} The main result of this paper is that if \(\Phi \) and \(f\) satisfy \((\Phi 1 )-(\Phi 4)\) and \((f1),(f2)\), respectively, then the considered problem has at least one solution in \(C^{2}\left( \left[ 0,1\right] ,\mathbb{R}\right) .\) The proof is based on a priori bounds for the solution and homotopical invariance of the Leray-Schauder degree. At the end of the paper some examples are given in order to illustrate the main result.
