The author extends the classical result of Meyers that if the Ricci curvature of a complete connected Riemannian manifold is uniformly positive, then the manifold is compact showing Theorem. Let $P$ be a point of a complete Riemannian manifold of dimension $n$. Suppose that $\operatorname {Ric}(Q)\ge(r_0+r)^{-k}C(n,k,r_0)$ where $d(P,Q)=r$ where, $C(n,k,r_0)$ is a suitably chosen constant, and where $k\ge2$. Then the manifold is compact. This is a complementary extension of previous results by \textit{E. Calabi} [Duke Math. J. 34, 667--676 (1967; Zbl 0153.51501)] and by \textit{J. Cheeger} et al. [J. Differ. Geom. 17, 15--53 (1982; Zbl 0493.53035)].
