The authors introduce a new geometric property called asymptotic midpoint uniform convexity based on a natural motivation. Recall first that S. Rolewicz introduced property \(\left( \beta \right) \) replacing the diameter of some set by its Kuratowski measure of noncompactness in a known characterization of uniform convexity. The authors consider another description of uniform convexity and its modification. For \(x\in X\) with \( \left\| x\right\| =1\) and \(\delta \in \left( 0,1\right) \) define \[ \mathrm{lens}\left( x,\delta \right) :=B\left[ x,1+\delta \right] \cap B\left[ -x,1+\delta \right] , \] where \(B\left[ u,r\right]\), \(u\in X\), \(r>0\), stands for the closed ball centered at \(u\in X\) with radius \(r\). The property that \(\mathrm{diam}\left( \mathrm{lens} \left( x,\delta \right) \right) \rightarrow 0\) as \(\delta \rightarrow 0\) uniformly in \(x\), \(\left\| x\right\| =1\), isometrically characterizes uniform convexity of the norm in \(X\). The authors introduce a new property replacing in the above the diameter by the Kuratowski measure of noncompactness. In Theorem 2.1 they prove some equivalent condition, which together with the known characterization of midpoint local uniform convexity (studied first by K. W. Anderson) allows them to call the new property asymptotic midpoint uniform convexity (AMUC) -- Definition 2.2. Moreover, the authors describe property AMUC in terms of an analogue of the UKK property -- Corollary 2.3. Next, they compare this new property with the known property called asymptotic uniform convexity (AUC). It is shown that AUC implies AMUC isometrically (Theorem 2.1) and the converse is not true (using some renorming of \(l_{2}\)). The authors also present another renorming of \(l_{2}\) to conclude that a reflexive midpoint locally uniformly convex Banach space need not have the Kadec-Klee property. Furthermore, they study relations between the moduli of asymptotic uniform smoothness and sign-asymptotic uniform smoothness. Finally, they consider the natural question whether properties AMUC and AUC are isomorphically equivalent. A partial positive answer is proved in Proposition 5.1.
