In this paper the authors extend an earlier principle of linearized stability for neutral delay differential equations of the form \[ \dot{x}(t)=g(\partial x_t, x_t) \] (see [the second author, Differ. Equ. Dyn. Syst. 19, No. 4, 315--333 (2011; Zbl. 1268.34137)]), where \(g\) is defined on an open subset of the space \(C([-h,0], \mathbb{R}^n) \times C^1([-h,0], \mathbb{R}^n)\), and \(\partial: C^1 \to C\) denotes the linear operator of differentiation. It is shown that one of the conditions in [loc. cit.], namely (g8), can be weakened so that the principle of linearized stability still holds true. The authors also establish that the result applies to the class of neutral differential equations \[ \dot{x}(t) = f(x(t), \dot{x}(t-\tau(x(t))), x(t-\sigma(x(t)))) \] with state-dependent delays, where \(f: \mathbb{R}^3 \supset V \to \mathbb{R}\), \(\tau: \mathbb{R}\to (0,h]\) and \(\sigma: \mathbb{R}\to [0,h]\) (\(h>0\)) are \(C^1\) functions, \(V\) is open, \(0\in V\), and \(f(0)=0\). As an illustrative example, the authors use their results to determine local stability properties of the positive equilibrium solution of a scalar population model \[ \dot{x}(t) = f(x(t), \dot{x}(t-\tau(x(t))), x(t-\tau(x(t)))) \] with maturation delay \(\tau\), which is state-dependent due to the -- biologically relevant -- assumption that maturation time of individuals depends on the size of the adult-population.
