The authors provide a rather exhaustive list of types of distance functions in sets or topological spaces, all obtained by taking a subset of the defining list of properties of a metric. Their main result, Theorem~2.1, takes a familiar technique, see [\textit{J.-I. Nagata}, Modern general topology. Bibliotheca Mathematica. 7. Amsterdam: North-Holland Publishing Company; Groningen: Wolters-Noordhoff Publishing (1968; Zbl 0181.25401), Chapter~VI], to extremes and proves a slew of results on possible quasi-pseudometrics associated to entourages in quasi-uniform spaces. This result is applied to metrization theorems and quasi-metrization theorems for general spaces and various algebraic structures such as topological semigroups and monoids and paratopological groups.
