In the paper a general theory of completeness is developed in the following setting. Given a convergence on a set \(X\) and \(\mathbb{P}\) a collection of families of subsets of \(X\), a filter \(\mathcal{F}\) is called \(\mathbb{P}\)-fundamental if \(\mathcal{F} \cap \mathcal{P} \not = \emptyset\) for each \(\mathcal{P} \in \mathbb{P}\). A convergence is called \(\mathbb{P}\)-complete if each \(\mathbb{P}\)-fundamental filter is adherent. The completeness number of a given convergence on \(X\) is defined as the least cardinal \(\kappa\) for which there exists a collection \(\mathbb{P}\) of covers of \(X\) with \(card\) \(\mathbb{P}\leq \kappa\) such that the convergence is \(\mathbb{P}\)-complete. Convergences with completeness number \(0\), finite or countable are characterized and the behaviour of the completeness number with respect to subspaces is studied. Nice product theorems are shown and the preservation of the completeness number with respect to perfect maps is investigated.
