Denote by \(p\) the natural projection \({\mathbb C}^m\times {\mathbb C}^n\to {\mathbb C}^n\). The author proves the following main theorem: if \(A\) is an irreducible \(k\)-dimensional locally analytic set in \({\mathbb C}^m\times {\mathbb C}^n\) such that \(p^{-1}(0)\cap A=\{0\}\), then \(i(p^{-1}(0)\cdot A;0)=\tilde{m}_0(p_{|_A})\deg_0p(A)\), where \(i(p^{-1}(0)\cdot A;0)\) denotes the Achilles-Tworzewski-Winiarski intersection index at the origin, \(\deg_0\) stands for the local degree, and \(\tilde{m}_0\) is a variant of geometric multiplicity of mappings. This statement generalizes a result of Spodzieja for branched coverings on domains in \({\mathbb C}^m\). As an application, a simple proof of a result of Ebenfelt and Rothschild on images of analytic submanifolds by finite holomorphic mappings is given.
