Let \(k\) be an algebraically closed field of characteristic \(p>0\), and let \(P\) be a \(p\)-subgroup of a finite group \(G\). The authors conjecture that every proper component of the permutation module \(k[G/P]\) is accordant. Here a proper component of the \(kG\)-module \(M\) is of the form \(eM\) where \(e\) is a block of \(\text{End}_{kG}(M)\), and the authors call \(M\) accordant if the number of simple \(kG\)-modules lying in \(M\) is equal to the number of isomorphism classes of weight modules lying in \(M\). Moreover, an indecomposable \(kG\)-module with vertex \(P\) is called a weight module if its Green correspondent in \(N_G(P)\) is the inflation of a simple projective \(k[N_G(P)/P]\)-module. Finally, the authors say that a \(kG\)-module \(L\) lies in \(M\) if \(L\) is isomorphic to the image of a \(kG\)-endomorphism of a direct sum of finitely many copies of \(M\). The authors' conjecture can be viewed as a refinement of Alperin's weight conjecture. Some evidence for the new conjecture is also provided.
