Let \((d_D)_D\), where \(D\) runs through all domains in all \(\mathbb C^n\)'s, be a holomorphically contractible system, i.e., \(d_D:D\times D\longrightarrow[0,+\infty)\), \(d_{\mathbb D}\) is the hyperbolic distance on the unit disc \(\mathbb D\), and \(d_G(f(z),f(w))\leq d_D(z,w)\), \(z, w\in D\), for arbitrary holomorphic mappings \(f:D\longrightarrow G\). Let \(D\) be a bounded domain and let \((D_n)_{n=1}^\infty\) be a sequence of bounded domains such that \(\overline D_n\longrightarrow\overline D\) in the sense of the Hausdorff distance. The author studies the conditions under which \(d_{D_n}\longrightarrow d_D\) pointwise. The main result is the following theorem. Assume that: {--} there exist sequences \((I_n)_{n=1}^\infty\), \((E_n)_{n=1}^\infty\) of domains such that \(I_n\nearrow D\), \(E_n\searrow\overline D\), and \(d_{I_n}\longrightarrow d_D\), \(d_{E_n}\longrightarrow d_D\) pointwise, {--} for every compact \(K\subset D\) there exists \(n_0\) such that \(K\subset D_n\) for all \(n\geq n_0\). \noindent Then \(d_{D_n}\longrightarrow d_D\) pointwise. The result can be applied to the case where \((d_D)_D\) is the system of Carathéodory (resp.~Green, Kobayashi, or Lempert) functions.
