The authors establish compactness results for extrapolation constructions which correspond to the Lions-Peetre compactness theorems in interpolation theory. In Section 2, they present the extrapolation constructions used. In Section 3, they review several important examples that come out using the abstract constructions as Zygmund spaces \(L^{p}(\log L)\), the grand Lebesgue spaces \(L_{p)}\) and the small Lebesgue spaces \(L_{(p}\). Section 4 is the central part of the paper, it contains compactness results and applications to limiting Sobolev embeddings. It is shown that, for any \(k\in \mathbb{N}\), the embedding \(W_{(p}^{k}(\Omega )\rightarrow L_{p^{\ast}}(\Omega \)) is compact provided that \(1<p<d/k\), where \(\Omega \) is a connected bounded open subset of \(\mathbb{R}^{d}\), with smooth boundary and with Lebesgue measure \(1\) and \(p^{\ast }=dp/(d-kp)\).
