An abstract linear operator equation in a Banach space \(E\) of the form \[ (A+B)x=y \] is considered. Here, \(A, B\) are closed linear commuting operators. The importance of the equation is that we can obtain abstract parabolic equations and abstract hyperbolic equations in particular cases. The equation is studied by using of the inverse of the sum of two sectorial operators. Nevertheless, an approach different from the classical approach is applied where complex powers of the operators are used. Namely, the inverse of the sum of the operators restricted to the images of complex powers of the operators is regarded. The boundedness of a special type of operator valued \(H^{\infty}\) calculus is proved to be sufficient for maximal regularity of the solution. To give a maximal \(L^p\) regularity condition, the results are applied to the abstract parabolic problem. The abstract hyperbolic problem is also studied and a sufficient condition for the existence of a solution is given.
