The author considers motives in the sense introduced by \textit{A. A. Panchishkin} [in: Proc. Symp. Pure Math. 55, Pt. 1, 461--483 (1994; Zbl 0931.14013)] and treats the case of a simple motive \(M\) of \(\text{GL}_2\)-type over a totally real number field \(K\) which is pure of weight \(w\). He in particular shows that \(E := \text{End}_K(M)\otimes \mathbb Q\) is a number field and that for each place \(\lambda\) of \(E\) there exists a character \(\varepsilon\) of finite order on the Galois group \(G_K\) with values in \(E_\lambda^\times\) such that the determinant of the representation \(\rho_\lambda\) belonging to \(M\) is \(\varepsilon\) times the \(w\)-th power of the \(\ell\)-adic cyclotomic character, where \(\lambda\) lies above \(\ell.\) Assuming a conjecture of Tate, the author obtains some results on traces of Frobenius elements. A main source of the paper is \textit{T. Yamauchi}'s paper [J. Number Theory 128, No. 6, 1485--1505 (2008; Zbl 1179.11017)] where many of the results have been shown in the case \(K=\mathbb Q.\) The author stresses that some results and arguments are also contained in papers of [\textit{K. A. Ribet}, Prog. Math. 224, 241--261 (2004; Zbl 1092.11029)], a reprint of a paper which appeared in 1992.
