\textit{C. Delman} [Topology Appl. 63, No. 3, 201--221 (1995; Zbl 0873.57007)] and \textit{Tanguay} [Ph.D. Thesis, Universié du Québec à Montréal, (1996)] independently proved that hyperbolic twists knots do not admit non-trivial Dehn surgeries with finite fundamental group (or, equivalently, do not admit finite fillings). This paper provides a new proof of this result that uses Khovanov homology. The approach to this proof is as follows. For a link \(L\), let \(w(L)\) denote its Khovanov homological width (i.e., the number of diagonals supporting the non-trivial homology), and let \(\Sigma(S^3,L)\) denote the two-fold branched cover of \(S^3\) branched over \(L\). In [Sel. Math., New Ser. 18, No. 2, 417--472 (2012; Zbl 1280.57002)] the author showed that if \(\Sigma(S^3,L)\) has a finite fundamental group then \(w(L)\leq 2\). In the present paper, it is shown that manifolds resulting from surgery along hyperbolic twist knots, other than the figure eight knot, can be realised as two-fold branched covers \(\Sigma(S^3,L)\) for a link with \(w(L)>2\). The main result of the paper then follows for all hyperbolic twists knots except for the figure eight knot which is dealt with as a separate case.
