Let A be a \(C^*\)-algebra with a separating state \(\rho\). For a face F of the state space of A, \(I(F)=\inf \{S(\rho,\phi):\;\phi \in F\}\) where S(\(\rho\),\(\phi\)) denotes the relatively entropy of \(\rho\) and \(\phi\). If \(I(F)<\infty\), then there is a unique state \(\rho_ F\) on A s.t. \(I(F)=S(\rho,\rho_ F)\). Limit formulae for I(F) and the minimizer \(\rho_ F\) are given in terms of exponential perturbations of \(\rho\) by selfadjoint operators from the closed left ideal of A associated with F (by means of the Effros-Prosser Theorem). A superadditive functional \({\check \rho}\) is defined on the set of faces by \({\check \rho}(F)=\exp (-I(F)),\) and \({\check \rho}\)(F\({}_{1-p})\) is denoted by \({\check \rho}\)(p) (p being a projection of A). If A is a \(W^*\)-algebra and \(\rho\) is normal, then, for any abelian \(W^*\)-subalgebra N, there is a unique largest normal poisitive linear functional \(\mu_ N\) on n s.t. \(\mu_ N\leq \rho\) on projections of N. This functional is the unique solution of the minimal entropy problem.
