Let X be a G-space. There is an induced homomorphism \(\Phi_*: G\to \epsilon (X)\), the group of homotopy classes of self-homotopy equivalence. If p: \(X\to Y\) is a regular covering and G its deck transformation group, then the author investigates the kernel of \(\Phi_*\) and proves several exact sequences with applications. For instance, a map f: \(S^ n\to x\) (n\(\geq 2)\) is G-equivariant up to homotopy if and only if all Whitehead products \([\pi_ 1(Y,*),pf]\) vanish.
