Let G be a compact Lie group. The projection \(EG_+\to S^ 0\) induces a map of spectra \[ \Phi: (S^ 0)^ G\to F(BG_+,S^ 0)=DBG_+ \] where F(-) denotes the function space spectrum. If \(AdW_ H\) is the adjoint representation of \(W_ H=N_ GH/H\) for \(H\leq G\) then \[ (S^ 0)^ G\quad \simeq \bigvee_{(H)}BW_ H^{AdW_ H}, \] a wedge of Thom spaces taken over conjugacy classes of closed \(H\leq G\). Using his previous result that the resulting map \(BG^{AdG}\to DBG_+\) is split injective when p-completed combined with homological approximations of \textit{E. Friedlander} and \textit{G. Mislin} [Comment. Math. Helv. 59, 347- 361 (1984; Zbl 0548.55016)], the author proves the following result. Theorem: If q and p are distinct primes \[ \lim_{\leftarrow j}(BGL(m,{\mathbb{F}}_{p^{n_ j}})_+)_ q{\hat{\;}}\simeq (BU(m)^{AdU(m)})_ q{\hat{\;}} \] where the homotopy inverse limit is taken over the transfer maps. Similar results are proved for the orthogonal and symplectic groups and are conjectured to hold for any Lie group.
