When the finite element method is used to approximate the solution of partial differential equations in two dimensions the Richardson extrapolation is serviceable provided error expansions are available. In cases where the domain has reentrant corners the pollution effect of these corners usually is reduced by local refinement of the mesh, which, however, complicates the error estimation. In this paper the bilinear finite element solution is defined on the quadrilateral mesh and with certain local refinement procedure one step of extrapolation increases the order of approximation ``almost'' from 2 to 3.
