On the order of prolongations and restrictions in multigrid procedures (Q2638750)

It is a well known fact that the sum of the orders of the prolongation and of the restriction in multigrid methods should at least be equal to the order of the differential equation considered. The author shows that \(m_ 2+n_ 2\geq M\) \((m_ 2\), \(n_ 2\) ``high frequency order'' of the prolongation and the restriction, M the order of the differential operator) is a necessary condition for nonincreasing high frequencies arising from a coarse grid correction.
