\textit{L. Colzani} [J. Approximation Theory 56, No.2, 152-154 (1989; Zbl 0702.41022)] proved that the approximation of a function by its Fejér means is monotone in \(L^ 2(T)\) but not more in C(T). The authors show that this is a general situation, namely: For every approximate unit \(\{K_{\alpha}\}_{\alpha >0}\) in \(L^ 1(T^ n)\), \(T=[-1/2,1/2)\) and for every \(\alpha_ 1>\alpha_ 2>0\) there exists a function \(f\in C(T^ n)\) such that \(\| K^*_{\alpha_ 2}f-f\| >\| K^*_{\alpha_ 1}f-f\|_{\infty}.\) Making some supplementary assumptions on \(\{K_{\alpha}\}\) one obtains more refined results which hold, in particular, for the classical kernels of Fejér, Poisson, Gaus.
