The author proves the following theorem. Let X and Y be irreducible compact Hermitian symmetric spaces of the same dimension, and Y be of rank at least two. Then any non-constant holomorphic map f from X to Y is necessarily a biholomorphism. The proof is achieved via the notion of minimal rational curves. A minimal rational curve of an irreducible compact Hermitian symmetric space Z is any rational curve in Z which is homologically a generator of the second homology group of Z. By using methods of complex differential geometry the author proves that the preimage C of a generic minimal rational curve under f is totally geodesic with respect to any canonical metric of X. Then it is deduced that C is minimal rational, and the theorem follows from this. The case where X and Y are both assumed to be Grassmannian manifolds was also treated by \textit{K. H. Paranjape} and \textit{V. Srinivas} in Invent. Math. 98, 425-444 (1989; Zbl 0697.14037).
