Combined methods consisting of the Ritz-Galerkin method using singular or analytic basic functions for one part \(S_ 2\) of the solution domain S, where there are singular points, and the finite element method for the remaining part \(S_ 1\) of S, where the solution is smooth enough, for solving elliptic boundary value problems with singularities are proposed. A general approach using additional integrals is presented to match different numerical methods along their common boundary \(\Gamma_ 0\). An error and stability analysis for such a general coupling strategy is provided. The analysis is important because it forms a theoretical basis for a number of combinations between various types of the Ritz-Galerkin and finite element methods and because it can lead to new combinations of other methods, such as a combined method of the Ritz-Galerkin and finite difference method. The analysis can be also applied or extended to solve general boundary value problems with angular singularities, interface singularity or unbounded domain.
