Let \(p,q>1\) be integers and let \(C_p\subset [0,1]\) be a set defined by forbidding a finite collection of patterns in the base p expansion. The authors prove that \(C_p\) is a Cantor set iff it contains an irrational and that in this case, it contains real numbers whose base \(q\) expansion contains all possible patterns of finite length iff \(p\) and \(q\) are not powers of the same integer. Apparently independently, a stronger result has been recently obtained by J. Feldman and M. Smorodinsky. They showed that if \(C_p\) is a Cantor set and \(p,q\) are not powers of the same integer, almost all points in \(C_p\) (with respect to the measure of maximal entropy for \(x\to px \bmod 1)\) are completely normal to the base \(q\).
